It wasn’t the first time we had been to Amsterdam. This time we promised ourselves that we wouldn’t do the usual tourist stuff. We wanted to experience the local culture instead of taking that cruise along the canals like last time.

On arrival, we immediately knew we had chosen the hotel or should I rather say house, well. The hostess greeted us warmly and recommended a local café where we could have a good lunch for a reasonable price. If you go to the right places the ‘Amsterdammers’ are really friendly. We were given the names of a few bars to try and found ourselves later that night in a cosy little bar where we tried a number of Belgium and Dutch beers.

The next day didn’t disappoint either. Upon recommendation, we had a delicious breakfast just around the corner from our hotel. After that, without planning a route or marking any end destination we set out to discover the city. We found a flyer which led to a temporary art exhibition in the Nieuwe Kerk or church and later that day we enjoyed a romantic sunset walk in Vondelpark.

After a day spent on our feet, it was great to come back to the house, kick our shoes off and sink into bed.
